I just ran the New York City half-marathon, and while my time would make a real marathoner guffaw, the body and soul both need something like this occasionally, no matter how inexpertly done. Partly, of course, it’s the physical challenge, knowing that I pushed my body to its utmost; When I pounded across that finish line, feeling nauseous, I knew I had nothing left to give. (Or did I? could I improv my time next year?) But there are also benefits for the mind — because for once, I’m not staring at words. I’m aware of my body and the environment around me, and nothing else.
